Coco Gauff won the 2023 US Open after beating Aryna Sabalenka in the final, and understandably, it was difficult for her to hold her emotions.
Only recently, the 19-year-old American won her biggest career title in Washington at a WTA 500 tournament. Only a few weeks later, she improved that by winning the 2023 Cincinnati Masters, and there was only one more step where she could go.
Winning a Grand Slam title is obviously the goal for probably every tennis player, and Gauff is no different, and after winning her maiden WTA 500 and WTA 1000 titles, the young American couldn't hold back her tears after winning her maiden Grand Slam trophy at the 2023 US Open.
Tears streamed down Gauff's face as she took in the magnitude of her achievement after falling down to the ground following her backhand winner that sealed the match victory as the Belarusian only watched the ball speed past her.
The victory was more than just her maiden Grand Slam title. It was a testament to her growth as a player, her ability to learn, adapt, and overcome. While she may shy away from comparisons to the legendary Serena Williams, her accomplishment as the youngest American to clinch the US Open title since Williams in 1999 speaks volumes.
As Coco Gauff stood at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, trophy in hand and emotions pouring out, one thing became clear – the future of women's tennis is not just promising, it has arrived. The young American celebrated her win also with her team, and after the initial tears, the 19-year-old just couldn't stop smiling.
The victory means a lot to her, and the amplitude of what she's achieved will become palpable only over the upcoming weeks, as Gauff will get to know all of the records that she broke and all of the milestones and achievements.
