Venus Williams vs Madison Keys: 2023 Canadian Open Montreal - Preview & Prediction

by Alfredo Bassanelli

Venus Williams will start her campaign against compatriot Madison Keys at the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal.

The Canadian Open in North America will see two Americans battle it out north of the United States of America. It's a mouthful but fans are hopeful the match ends up being like that. Exciting and kind of tiring by the end of it as we have all the ingredients for such a clash.

We have two really strong tennis players who prefer to hit the ball really hard. Depending on various factors, Madison Keys can go from amazing to not-so-good. She's been pretty good recently with a few good wins and she's always a danger due to her shot-making ability.

Williams is in the draw after accepting a wild card entry, and she's hopeful of showing some of that grass season mojo she had. She started preparations early, but with her, it's always going to be about health.

Head-to-head:

They played five matches so far which is kind of expected as both of them have been active for a while. Keys leads 3-2, having won the two most recent matches. The last one played was a long time ago in 2019, and Keys won it easily in two sets.

The one before that happened in 2016 in Montreal with Keys winning in three sets. This one will also be in Montreal, and the only difference is that seven years passed since then.

Prediction:

Obviously, you don't need to have a degree in tennis to understand that Keys is largely favoured here. She's the younger and fitter player, though she can be beaten if pushed hard enough by Williams.

The legend's status is not known, so she might be a bit rusty, however, even her best right now might not be enough, as Keys is able of producing really good tennis.

Prediction: Madison Keys in straight sets.
