Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez have experienced huge drops in the newest edition of the WTA Rankings after the 2022 US Open.
In 2021, Raducanu and Fernandez played in one of the most unexpected Grand Slam finals ever. The British player made it to the US Open final through the qualifying, while Fernandez wasn't among the seeded players either.
Eventually, Raducanu won the title, which guaranteed her a huge paycheque but also 2,000 WTA ranking points. Thanks to those points, she made her Top 10 debut this year, but with the US Open came also need to defend those points.
The British player couldn't do that, as she lost already in the first round to Alize Cornet, 3-6, 3-6. As a result, she lost almost all of her 2,000 points. That meant a huge slip down the rankings for last year's champion.
After entering the 2022 US Open as the World No. 11 player, Raducanu now dropped all the way down to the No. 83 position. It was the most significant drop of the week and one of the biggest drops in the history of the rankings.
On the other hand, Fernandez experienced a big drop, too, but hers didn't see her leave the Top 40. The Canadian player went from the World No. 14 to the No. 40 position, dropping down by 26 places.
But they were not the only two players who dropped in the rankings. Angelique Kerber, who reached the fourth round last year, dropped to the World No. 70 position (down by 20 places) after she couldn't compete at this year's tournament due to pregnancy.
Elise Mertens, who also reached the fourth round last year, lost already in the first round this year, which meant she went down by ten positions, dropping from World No. 33 to No. 44 spot.
