Angelique Kerber has announced her pregnancy ahead of the 2022 US Open, confirming that she won’t be playing at the event, but she will be coming back after she gives birth.
It’s been an exciting time for Kerber, who is embarking on a new chapter of her life, one that will leave her changed forever. It’s pregnancy, which means that in a couple of months, the German player will be joining the ranks of mothers on the WTA Tour.
It’s very happy news but maybe a bit bittersweet for her tennis fans because while they’ll be happy to hear that she has opted to become a mother, the German won’t be on the courts for a while.
She announced the happy news ahead of the US Open, jokingly pointing out that competing two against one wouldn’t be fair so she’s elected to withdraw from the event.
"I really wanted to play the US Open, but eventually I decided that two against one just isn’t a fair competition. For the next months, I will take a break from travelling the globe as a tennis player, but then again, I believe it’s for the best possible reason. I will miss all of you."
The German player also confirmed that she will obviously come back to the sport after her pregnancy, which is great news for the sport and tennis fans.
"I'll definitely be back."
At her peak, Kerber was one of the best players in the world, and even at this stage of her career, she’s still very good. She last competed at Wimbledon, where she lost to Elise Mertens, but overall, it was still a solid outing for her.
Time will tell when she’ll be back, but she won’t be coming back this year for sure, with the likely timeline pointing to the end of the 2023 season.
