There always have been some pretty talented teenagers in tennis, but what Coco Gauff has been doing this year has been special.
Not only is she one of the best players in the world, she's by far the best teenager on the WTA Tour as she's still only 19 years old. She's not the only teenager doing great things on Tour, but she's by far the best among them, as stats show.
Let's just start with the fact that she won a Grand Slam trophy this year, which hasn't been done by any of the other players who are around her age. Some have won matches and made some decent runs at some events, like Mirra Andreeva, but nobody comes close to what she did.
Let's just look at some of them. The best teenager outside of Gauff is Czech Republic's Linda Noskova who is currently ranked 41st in the world. She trails Gauff 38 spots in the rankings and some 5000 ranking points.
Tennis phenom Mirra Andreeva is not far behind from Noskova at number 46 with 1149 points. That's another five places behind the talented American. The distance only gets bigger as you go down the list, which shows that there are plenty of talented teenagers in tennis.
That's always been the case, but there are levels to it. What Gauff has been doing this year has been special. What she's been doing in the years before this one was even more special because look at these stats. She's been a really highly-ranked player for a while now, and very few teenagers ever get there.
Now remember they are some of the most talented players to emerge because they wouldn't be as good so early as they weren't. That's some historic stuff from the American, and she can take it even another step further in 2024.
