Amanda Anisimova played and lost her first Grand Slam final, but she was able to see the positives after her loss at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
Anisimova has always been an incredibly talented player. She first reached a major semi-final in 2019 as a 17-year-old. Back then, the American made it to the last four at the French Open. Six years and many challenges later, she reached her first Grand Slam final.
The 23-year-old made it to the final at Wimbledon, but the result of that final was far from what she imagined. Iga Swiatek beat her 6-0, 6-0 to lift her sixth Grand Slam title. Following such a loss, Anisimova, understandably, struggled to hold back her tears.
However, with each minute passing after losing the match, the WTA World No. 12 player was able to look at the positives. One of them was meeting the Princess of Wales after the final.
Anisimova admitted that she wasn't sure whether she would be able to meet the Princess, but meeting her, and especially hearing the encouraging words, was a special experience for her.
"It was such an honor to meet her. I wasn’t sure if she was gonna come out today. It was really nice to see her. She definitely had a few things to say that were making me emotional again. But she was really kind and told me to keep my head high."
"I don’t want to reveal everything she said to me, but I also spoke to her again after the match because I passed by her. She had all the best to say to me. So it was a positive of today, and I can try and focus on that and not the match."
During her post-match press conference, Anisimova was asked about how it felt during and after the final. It was the first women's singles final at Wimbledon since 1911, when Dorothea Lambert Chambers beat Dora Boothby, that ended with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline.
"It was a bit tough to digest, obviously, especially during and right after. It’s not how I would have wanted my first Grand Slam final to go. I think I was a bit in shock after as well. But I told myself I’ll definitely come out stronger after this."
"It’s not an easy thing to go through. Losing 6-0, 6-0 in a Grand Slam final. If anything, I can look at it as a positive and something I can look at as motivation going forward. Obviously, there are a lot of things I need to do to progress."
Anisimova, who will break into the Top 10 for the first time in her career after Wimbledon, appears on the entry list for the 2025 Citi Open in Washington. However, it's very probable that the American will choose to skip that tournament after her run in London and appear at the Canadian Open in Montreal with the rest of the Tour.
