'Not To Shade Men': Gauff Satisfied With 'Outstanding' State Of American Tennis

Coco Gauff praised the current state of American tennis as it's booming on both the ATP and WTA sides of tennis.

On the ATP side of tennis, Americans have been making some noise for a few years now. Whether it's the generation of Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz or this new one with Sebastian Korda and Ben Shelton, there are more and more American players coming through the ranks.

As a historically great tennis nation, it's not a huge surprise, but there were some periods when the country didn't produce many great players. The past 10-15 years have been somewhat lacking on the men's side, so it's good to see things turning around.

On the women's side of the sport, there is Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff, who have been carrying the flag for a few years now. Gauff particularly seems destined to be one of the leading players in the sport for many years to come, especially after Serena Williams' retirement.

It's just a really good time for American tennis, something Gauff mentioned ahead of the 2023 WTA Finals, where she talked to the press.

The state of American tennis is outstanding. Not to shade the men, but it's actually even on both sides. I'm really, really happy with how both the men and women players are doing. Have a lot of players in the top 30 on both sides. That's just super exciting.

We'll see what the coming years bring, but it seems likely that the country will have a couple of really strong players in the next decade at least. They will likely inspire even more players to pick up the racquets in the future, especially if they keep winning like Gauff did at the US Open.

A trophy from the WTA Finals wouldn't hurt either, so stick with us to get all the latest from the WTA Finals.
