Serena Williams has announced that she will officially retire at this year’s US Open. However, she might have some future in tennis in the coming years after all.

Williams is already 40, and while she could technically play more if she wanted to, she very likely won’t. That’s her plan, at least for now, because she announced her retirement earlier this year, with the final event being the US Open.

It’s her home Grand Slam and the event where she would likely be celebrated the most out of all of the tournaments, so it was a natural place to retire. Although the plan is set for her retirement, and it seems like she will stick to it, some wonder whether she could change her mind in the future.

One thing that history has shown often with legendary athletes is that often they don’t really know when to stop. Some of them go beyond what is necessary, so while Williams will retire at the US Open, her future in the sport might remain open.

It seems like that’s a real possibility for Williams who admitted during an appearance on the Today show that never say never is something she truly believes in.

"You never know. I’ve learned in my career, never say never."

Time will ultimately tell whether this will be the final event for Williams, but it’s clear that she still has lots of love for tennis. She didn’t make the choice to retire with ease.

"I love what I do; there’s nothing about me not loving my job. I love it. I’ve been playing it my whole entire life. It’s very emotional to evolve into something new."
"There is no happiness in this topic for me. I know it’s not the usual thing to say, but I feel a great deal of pain. It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I hate it. I hate that I have to be at this crossroads."
