Mirra Andreeva will take on Leylah Fernandez at the 2023 Hong Kong Open, and it promises to be a really good battle between the players.
Leylah Fernandez has struggled to really find her best tennis after making the US Open final two years ago. This year has been somewhat good towards that as she finally managed to play a lot of matches, but for the most part, she couldn't find her top level.
She only recently put together a good run in Guadalajara at the WTA 1000 event, which she hopes persists into the next events. A good test for her is coming up as she faces Mirra Andreeve, who has been in spectacular form in Asia.
She easily won multiple matches, including the most recent one against Dayana Yastremska at the Hong Kong Open. So what might happen here? Well, a couple of things because the matchup does skew heavily towards Andreeva, which we saw earlier this year in Madrid.
Head-to-head:
Andreeva and Fernandez played once before and it happened at the Madrid Open, where the 16-year-old earned a pretty big win 6-3 6-4. She would add a couple of more before finally getting beaten by eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.
That match demonstrated how this matchup shakes up and it's very bad news for Fernandez.
Prediction:
It's bad news mostly because the Canadian loves to play attacking tennis, but she's very inconsistent with it. She can be absolutely amazing when everything is going well, but recently, things haven't gone that well for her. She's prone to overhit often and likely will in this one.
Andreeva is really good at baiting her opponents into attacking her from unconventional positions, and it happens often because she has such a brilliant touch. She always forces you into tricky situations, and even some of the best hitters, like Elena Rybakina, struggle with her defence. I don't see Fernandez faring any better.
Prediction: Mirra Andreeva to win in two sets.
