Daria Kasatkina didn't play at Wimbledon last year but she will play this year and she won't have to deal with any additional stress thanks to the newly changed underwear rule.
Up until this year, Wimbledon had an all-white rule in place for literally everything including underwear. That created a lot of unnecessary worry for most female players at the event, especially if they were on their period.
The event finally listened to players after years, changing the rule for this year's edition which will allow players to wear underwear in different colours as opposed to the previously mandatory white ones. AELTC Chief Executive Sara Bolton explained the decision as Wimbledon's listening to the players.
We are committed to supporting the players and listening to their feedback as to how they can perform at their best. From next year, women and girls competing at The Championships will have the option of wearing coloured under shorts if they choose.
The decision was welcomed by many former and current players as the campaign for this rule change lasted years. Coco Gauff described it as a big relief and Daria Kasatkina is of a similar mind. The Russian shared that the entire locker room is very happy with the decision as players didn't need the added stress of worrying about anything showing.
All the girls are really happy with this decision because it's one thing to deal on court with your opponent and your own stress and nerves. If you have additional stress of thinking about your period and stuff and if your skirt will get dirty, it’s additional stress which you don’t want to think about.
The decision will have no impact on the event's prestige as the signature white outfits remain but the small change is rather significant for the players. Kasatkina highlighted that in her comment which is why the decision taking so long was baffling in the first place.
Finally we’ve got this little adjustment and I don’t think it's going to hurt the tournament but for the players, for us, for the girls, it’s going to be such a big deal.
