Iga Swiatek wasn't that comfortable on the grass in the past but she's slowly finding her groove on the surface ahead of Wimbledon.
Swiatek has never been the best player on grass as she didn't really play that much on the surface. She did win the Wimbledon junior trophy in 2018 but playing in juniors and professionals is very different. By the time she got to the professionals on the WTA Tour, she faced players who have dozens of matches on the grass and it showed.
She's doing a bit better this year making her maiden quarter-final on the grass at the 2023 Bad Homburg Open. It comes after a solid win over Teichmann and you can slowly see the confidence in her game and in her comments start to show.
I'm pretty happy that I have the opportunity to play more matches here and for sure today was a good day. I'm pretty happy with my performance and I felt like I had everything under control so that's great.
It doesn't mean that she will win Wimbledon or something because Swiatek herself treats everything as a learning process. She understands that she's got plenty to learn about playing on grass and every match is an opportunity to do that. Learn more and get better overall.
But for now I'm just kind of focusing on the process and learning as much as possible. But every day, I feel like I'm getting more experience and I'm growing up, and it's a little bit easier every year to kind of convert my tennis from clay court style to more grass court style. But I think it ill come with experience. I'm pretty positive about the future on grass.
More than a few people are bullish about her future on grass as Mats Wilander recently said that she can win multiple Wimbledon trophies. She certainly has the talent for it and her game can work well on the surface. It's the experience that she needs and she's getting it right now.
