Iga Swiatek defeated Jil Teichmann at the 2023 Bad Homburg Open to reach her first quarterfinals on the surface.
In 2018, the young Pole won the Girls' Wimbledon event, proving her qualities on the grass. However, once she turned to the WTA Tour, Swiatek didn't really play that well on the surface, struggling on multiple occasions.
Last year, the Pole had a 37-match winning streak, but it was in the third round of Wimbledon that her streak was ended. Swiatek knows she needs to improve on the surface, as she still feels uncomfortable when playing on the grass.
In the first round of the 2023 Bad Homburg Open, she lost the first set to Tatjana Maria, but eventually produced a dominant display, beating her opponent 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 to reach the second round of the tournament.
In the second round, Swiatek took on another tricky opponent, left-handed Jil Teichmann, who was certainly afraid of leaving Iga's bakery with a donut in her hand, as the Pole equalled 22 years old record in winning sets 6-0.
But the match started better for the Swiss player. She won her first service game comfortably, and even had break points in the second set. But Swiatek saved them all and in the fifth game of the set, she broke her opponent's serve to lead for the first time in the match.
The top seed then added one more break to finish the first set by winning eight consecutive points, and win it 6-3. Going into the second set, the Pole had all the confidence she needed to reach her maiden quarterfinals on the grass, and she did it in style.
This time, in her typical fashion, not allowing her opponent to do much. Swiatek broke Teichmann's serve two more times to win the match 6-3, 6-1, and reach the 2023 Bad Homburg Open quarterfinals, her first on the surface. Up next, she will await either the ninth-seeded Anna Blinkova or 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez.
