Former Champion Bianca Andreescu Forced To Withdraw From 2023 US Open

Bianca Andreescu was once again stopped by an injury, this time forcing her to withdraw from the 2023 US Open.

It was at Flushing Meadows where the Canadian enjoyed her biggest success to date when she won the 2019 US Open. It's been an incredible title run for the youngster, who won the WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Toronto, and ended it with a Grand Slam trophy in her hands.

However, since then, Andreescu has been struggling. She dropped out of the Top 50 in the WTA Rankings, and despite showing some promise in some of this year's matches, she struggled with injuries multiple times once again.

Most recently, an injury impacted her during a loss to Camila Giorgi in Montreal, and as a result, she was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Cincinnati Masters. The Canadian had high hopes of recovering for the last major of the season, but she wasn't successful on the mission.

It's obvious that Andreescu has been in a fight with time, as she withdrew after the draw was made, knowing that her first-round opponent was supposed to be Lesia Tsurenko from Ukraine. However, now, she will be replaced by one of the lucky losers or qualifiers.

Given Andreescu’s storied relationship with the US Open, this development is particularly heart-wrenching. After her groundbreaking victory in 2019, she returned in 2021, after missing the full 2020 season, only to be eliminated in the fourth round of the tournament.

Last year's third-round exit was another setback. Thus, 2023 could have been a pivotal year for Andreescu, one where she could potentially reassert herself on tennis’s grandest stages. But now we know that it won't happen, and it remains to be seen whether the former world no. 4 will return to the tennis courts this year.
