Sensational rise of Caroline Garcia ended in a fairytale for the French player as she lifted the biggest title of her career at the 2022 WTA Finals.
Caroline Garcia started the 2022 season as world no. 74 in the WTA Rankings. Moreover, her last WTA title came in Nottingham back in 2019 and she failed to finish in Top 40 for three consecutive seasons. However, 2022 was much different for her as she managed to win four tournaments and climb all the way to the fourth place.
In the last round-robin match of the WTA Finals, Garcia took on Daria Kasatkina and at one point, she was only two points away from being knocked out of the event. However, she reached the final, where she took on Aryna Sabalenka, who previously eliminated world no. 1, Iga Swiatek.
The final match wasn't the one full of breaks as both players were super solid on their serves. In the first set, there were no break points as it had to be decided in a tie-break. Garcia showed her qualities and won it 7-4 to get an important lead.
She started well also in the second set by getting an early break and converting the only break point of the match. Then, both players continued to dominate on their serves and so nothing stopped Garcia from winning 7-6(4), 6-4 and claiming the biggest title of her career at the 2022 WTA Finals.
“It’s definitely a lot of giant happiness,” Garcia said in her post-match press conference. “A crazy final, a lot of intensity on every point. Just really proud of the work we did through all the year. It was a great match -- really went for it. I’m really happy to win my biggest title."
