Paula Badosa and Petra Kvitova weren't able to make it to their second-round matches at the 2025 Italian Open in Rome, as they both withdrew from the tournament.
Badosa has been struggling with a chronic back injury, which means that she will likely end her tennis career very young. Despite recently returning to the Top 10, the Spaniard couldn't follow up on her good results, as her body simply doesn't allow her to.
She wanted to play in front of home fans in Madrid, but had to withdraw from the WTA 1000 tournament, and her attempt to compete at the WTA 1000 event in Rome ended identically.
Badosa was set to play Naomi Osaka in the second round of the event, thanks to having a first-round BYE as one of the seeded players. Still, even the extra time she had to prepare wasn't sufficient for the 27-year-old.
Badosa withdrew from the tournament, and since she didn't play any matches before, she was replaced by a lucky loser. Viktorija Golubic got her chance to take on Osaka for a spot in the third round of the tournament.
Another withdrawal saw one of the new mothers on the WTA Tour, Petra Kvitova, withdraw from her second-round match against Ons Jabeur. The Czech player already competed in Rome, as she won her first-round match against Irina-Camelia Begu 7-5, 6-1.
It was Kvitova's first win as a mother, and undoubtedly a special win, but for now, she won't get a chance to follow up on it. Like Badosa, she withdrew prior to her second-round match.
The two-time Wimbledon champion was supposed to take on Ons Jabeur, but since she had already played a match at the event, a lucky loser couldn't replace her.
That means that without lifting her racket, Jabeur will move to the third round of the tournament. Although the Tunisian is certainly disappointed for her colleague, this is also a lucky break that she needed.
Jabeur has lost five of the last six matches that she has played, exiting tournaments in Dubai, Indian Wells, and Madrid in the first round. Now, she got a "free pass" into the third round without even having to appear on the tennis courts.
Up next, Jabeur won't face an easy task as she will take on the winner of the match between home crowd favorite Jasmine Paolini, who is the sixth seed, and Lulu Sun.
