Andreescu Admits To Feeling 'Shocked' About Losing Matches After US Open Triumph

Bianca Andreescu is in Paris for Roland Garros and it's a good thing to have her back considering how bad her ankle injury looked in Miami.

Bianca Andreescu hasn't had a lot of luck recently on the court as the Canadian has been battling injuries pretty much since the start of her comeback. Any time she starts playing better, she somehow manages to get injured again and it's just a vicious cycle for her.

The Miami Open open saw her injury herself again and it looked very bad. Thankfully the injury wasn't as bad and she made a return to the sport about a month after the injury. Speaking at Roland Garros, Andreescu referenced that injury and the disappointment she felt after it happened.

First of all, it was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. And second, I was thinking: ‘Why me? Why again?’ and in Miami too, every time I’m in Miami – 2019, 2021, 2023, I’m playing really good tennis, and then I get injured.

The expectations are pretty high for Andreescu because she knows that she has what it takes to be number one and win grand slams. Being motivated is a huge part of that and she has found it in recent months. It took stepping away from the courts to really focus on her mental health to find it.

She had many thoughts about her life and career even quite a few negative ones like completely quitting tennis altogether. Stepping away from the game made her realize how much she misses it but it also gave her a moment to really introspect and realize that there are far more important things than tennis. The perspective she gained is a vital part of the way she looks at her career now.

There are more important things out there than winning or losing or even just playing tennis. I’m very grateful to play but having food on the table is more important, amazing parents, supportive friends, little things like that. Thinking about that has really helped me shift my perspective.

Andreescu also revealed that once her incredible run, which reached its peak at the 2019 US Open where she won the trophy, ended, she couldn't really understand the fact that she once again started losing matches.

"And then when I started losing, I didn’t know what was happening in a way. I didn’t know how to deal with it. I was shocked, which was really weird because people are losing every single week in tennis. And now I know how it feels. I’ve been through it and I’m glad that I did because I was able to realise that if I want to have a long career, I can’t continue like that."
