Federico Coria was born on March 9, 1992, in Rosario, Argentina, to Oscar and Graciela Coria. He is the younger brother of Guillermo Coria, who reached the French Open final in 2004. Federico idolized his brother growing up, referring to him as his superhero. Like Guillermo, Federico is a clay-court specialist, with every final during his career at all levels coming on the dirt.
It took the Argentine some time to have a breakthrough on the ATP Tour. By the end of 2019, Coria had only claimed one victory at that level. He spent several years competing on the ITF Futures Circuit, winning nine of those titles in total. Coria’s form improved in 2019, with some strong performances on the ATP Challenger Tour. He secured his maiden Challenger Tour title in Savannah, USA, by defeating Paolo Lorenzi.
This was followed by three more finals in 2019, although he finished as the runner-up on all three occasions. Those efforts in 2019 allowed Coria to play more regularly on the ATP Tour, although he has continued to regularly play in Challenger tournaments. He has claimed five more of those titles, with the most recent of these coming in Szczecin, Poland, in October 2023.
Coria had his best run at a Grand Slam to date at the 2020 Roland Garros. He progressed to the third round with triumphs against Jason Jung and local hero Benoit Paire. His tournament was ended in straight sets by the future world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
The Argentine progressed to his maiden ATP Tour final the following year at the 2021 Swedish Open. He achieved this with victories against Francisco Cerundolo, Marco Cecchniato, Cristian Garin, and Yannick Hanfmann. Coria lost 3-6, 3-6 to the future French Open runner-up Casper Ruud in the final.
After a steady 2022 season without any major standout moments, Coria reached another ATP final on home soil in Cordoba in February 2023. He defeated Thiago Monteiro, Marco Cecchinato, Francisco Cerundolo, and Albert Ramos Vinolas. Unfortunately, he fell in the final once again, losing this time to Sebastian Baez in three sets.
