Nick Kyrgios played his first singles Grand Slam final at the 2022 Wimbledon and in doing so, as his family were keen to explain afterwards, made them very proud.
As can be common practice amongst professional athletes and family members, it is a well-known fact that Nill Kyrgios, Nick's mother, almost never watches her son compete.
Whether it be the nerves, what is at stake or the emotions of live sport, Kyrgios' mother often chooses not to follow in the stadium. For another member of the Kyrgios family though, it is not the same.
Brother Chris can be a regular in the Australian's player box during matches. And in a recent interview with 9News, both Chris and Nill compared notes on how it is to be in Nick's box.
"I think he can [still win Wimbledon]. I did watch the replay and there were opportunities there. I think it was a big occasion for him. He might use that as experience."
Going on to talk about being there in the stadium to watch the match and live the emotions, Nill spoke about how one may not want to be there as part of Nick's direct team:
"You don't want to be in his box, you really don't. Because you don't know when stand and when to sit and when to clap and when to shout. We've been there and it's not a good experience."
Famous for not touring with a permanent coach, Nick Kyrgios has often been seen to vent any anger or frustration towards those who choose to accompany him and sit in his box.
That is what comes as part and parcel of being there for a professional sportsman or woman. When the emotions get too much they have to vent to someone and it is almost always the people in their box who bear the brunt of the outbursts.
