Novak Djokovic is a player known for his signature style whether it's his tennis, outfits or even haircut; none of it ever changes.
When you end up winning as much as Djokovic did in his career then it doesn't really make sense to change things. Ever since he emerged as a player, Djokovic didn't change much unless you count him getting a lot better at swinging racquets. He's still rocking the same haircut he had two decades ago and he's still one of the best players.
His tennis improved, and his sense of style improved but the haircut never changed. The only time he could ever recall changing it a bit was during his first Grand Slam appearance in 2005. He was playing in Australia taking on Marat Safin and he recalled the experience in a talk with GQ recently.
The only time in my life, when I coloured my hair, was when I played my first-ever Grand Slam match. It was 2005 in Australia, I was 17 and playing Marat Safin on the centre court. It was a night match so earlier in the day I went to a hair salon because my hair was too long.
I told the hairdresser that it was my first match, so she made the recommendation of doing something special to mark the occasion. I was up for it so we just coloured the front part slightly so it kind of faded on the side. I lost.
Marat Safin was still playing amazing tennis at that time as the Russian ended up as the champion of the event. For Djokovic, it was a good experience as he got a chance to see what it takes to win. Another thing that happened after that match was his mother questioning his choice.
My mom called me afterwards and was like, What were you thinking about? I was like, Hey, I'm young, I just wanted to do something."
Djokovic hasn't done anything outrageous since but didn't want to completely dismiss it. He joked that if his daughter wants to paint his nails or do something with his hair he might just oblige. His family is in London so perhaps we might see something this year.
What if my daughter wants me to paint my nails and do my hair differently? You never know.
