After several consecutive appearances in Acapulco, Stefanos Tsitsipas won't return to the event this year announcing a withdrawal.
Tsitsipas was supposed to be part of the stacked Mexican Open entry list, returning to an event he has called one of his favorites. The Greek player played there a couple of times in the past and has a trophy in doubles with Feliciano Lopez. He also played in the singles final but lost to Zverev that year.
"It is with great disappointment that I must announce my withdrawal from the 2023 Abierto Mexicano de Tennis in Acapulco due to a shoulder injury I sustained after the Australian Open. Mexico is one of my favorite destinations in the world, and I have always cherished the opportunity to compete in this prestigious tournament."
The injury comes at a very bad point in the season with the Indian Wells and Miami Masters events around the corner. Tsitsipas didn't reveal when his return will be and fans will be hoping it's sooner rather than later but shoulder injuries can be tough to deal with.
"Although this setback is disappointing, I am choosing to focus on the positives. I will use this time to rest, recover, and come back stronger than ever. I will continue to work hard and strive towards my goals, and I am confident that I will have many more opportunities to compete in Mexico in the future."
