Novak Djokovic's chances of competing at the 2022 US Open significantly improved after the latest change in regulations in the United States.
Only a few weeks ago, Djokovic sent a glimpse of hope with an emotional letter when he revealed that he was preparing for the US Open as if he was allowed to compete.
Now, it seems that the 21-time Grand Slam champion may, in fact, be allowed to enter the country and chase his 22nd Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open. When giving an update on his preparation a few weeks ago, Djokovic said he awaited some good news from the United States.
"I am preparing as if I will be allowed to compete while I await to hear if there is any room for me to travel to the US. Fingers crossed!"
On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is in charge of ensuring the health and safety of US citizens, updated guidance that loosens restrictions on isolation and social distancing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not yet updated its travel advice, which currently states that all foreigners must be fully vaccinated before entering the US.
However, it does state on its website that this is being reviewed in light of the most recent update. The statement from the CDC reads:
"This updated guidance is intended to apply to community settings. In the coming weeks, CDC will work to align stand-alone guidance documents, such as those for healthcare settings, congregate settings at higher risk of transmission, and travel, with today’s update."
Despite the change not taking place in the rules that would affect Djokovic, his hopes certainly increased as the travel restrictions should also be reviewed, and so only two weeks before the start of the fourth Grand Slam of the season, he may be given the green light to enter the country and compete.
