Casper Ruud isn’t known for many controversies, but he got a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct during a recent match at the 2022 Canadian Open.
Tennis rules are there to ensure some sort of integrity in the sport. Still, some of them are bizarre and have been called out. Some of them have been changed over the years, while some remain in place, to the dismay of many.
Ruud isn’t a player known to really pick a bone with rules; however, he encountered one he might not be too fond of. It happened recently at the Canadian Open, where he was issued a code violation by umpire Fergus Murphy.
The Norwegian was battling Roberto Bautista Agut, and the Spaniard won the opening set after an hour of play. What happened in the aftermath of that is one of the most bizarre situations this year on the tennis circuit.
Ruud requested a toilet break as he wanted to change his clothes in between sets. He was granted a toilet break; however, he didn’t really use the toilet. He simply went there to change his clothes, never actually using the toilet 'as intended.'
That broke a rule that many would characterize as a rather silly rule, but rules are enforced in tennis rather strictly, at least if the umpire decides so. As one of the more 'by the book' umpires, Murphy issued Ruud a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct because of that.
The Norwegian was stunned by it because he wasn’t even aware of the rule, so he required an explanation from the umpire, which he, in fairness, gave rather concisely.
The code violation didn’t end up having much of an impact on the match; however, it will come with a monetary fine, as Ruud could get up to $20,000 in fines for the 'unsportsmanlike conduct.'
