With the 2023 Australian Open just around the corner, all eyes are on the men's singles draw as the race for the world no. 1 ranking heats up.
Following the withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz, who has held the top spot since September 2022, several players have a chance to become the highest-ranked player on the ATP Tour. Rafael Nadal, currently ranked no. 2, will drop to 3770 points after the event. If he is able to defend his title in Melbourne, he will regain the no. 1 ranking with 6770 points as his compatriot would have only 6730.
Casper Ruud, currently ranked no. 3, will have 5720 points after the Australian Open. If Nadal, Djokovic or Tsitsipas don't win the tournament, Ruud will only need a final appearance to become world no. 1.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, world no. 4, will also need to win the Australian Open in order to become world no. 1. The Greek player had a chance to overtake Nadal in the rankings by winning the inaugural United Cup, but unfortunately for him, his team lost to Italy in the semifinal.
Lastly, Novak Djokovic, currently ranked no. 5, will also need to win the Australian Open in order to become world no. 1. Djokovic had a strong start to the year, reaching the final of the 2023 Adelaide International 1, in which he will meet Sebastian Korda.
With so many players in contention for the top spot, the 2023 Australian Open is sure to be an exciting tournament. Who will emerge as the new world no. 1? Only time will tell.
