Medvedev Beats Unwell Sinner To Lift His Maiden Miami Open Title

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Daniil Medvedev became the 2023 Miami Open after he defeated Jannik Sinner in the final match.

Before entering the 2023 Miami Open, it was the only ATP 1000 hard-court event in which Medvedev never played in the final. But coming motivated from a good showing at the Indian Wells, the Russian did well throughout the week and reached the final. But he wanted to push his mark even further and lift the trophy.

On his way to the final, the Russian stopped Christopher Eubanks' dream run and he also defeated his good friend Karen Khachanov in a three-set battle. On Monday, he was set to become the new leader of the 2023 ATP Race, regardless of the outcome of his final match against Sinner.

But Medvedev never lost to Sinner in the past and he wanted to keep his perfect H2H also after the final match in Miami. The Italian wasn't feeling at his best, as he also requested a physio after the seventh game of the first set, but the former world no. 1 was too good to be stopped.

Sinner got the first break in the first set, but his advantage didn't last long. He was broken back immediately and the aforementioned break with physio followed.

Medvedev held his serve without any major difficulties, losing only two more points on his service in the remaining games of the first set. On the other hand, the Italian couldn't take the opening set into a tie-break, as the Russian used his break in the twelfth game to win the first set 7-5.

In the second set, Medvedev kept his nearly perfect break point conversion rate. He used four of his six chances in the match, and two of three break points that he had in the second set.

As Sinner managed to get also one break, Medvedev had only one-break advantage but thanks to winning 88% of points after his first serve in the second set, he had no problem in winning it 6-3 to secure the 2023 Miami Open title.

On Monday, Medvedev will move to the fourth place in the ATP Rankings while Sinner will return to the Top 10 and match his career-high 9th place.
