The much-anticipated exhibition match between Nick Kyrgios and Holger Rune is no longer taking place.

The special exhibition event, titled 'Energi Danmark Champions Battle 2023', was eagerly awaited, especially by tennis fans in Denmark who don't often get to see their prodigy in live action. Scheduled to occur at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 24th, it was destined to be a spectacular battle of tennis titans.

The Australian was expected to make a return to the court against Denmark's rising star, after a prolonged hiatus since October 2022. However, fate had other plans. According to the report, Kyrgios suffered a severe foot injury during an event in Australia.

The news of his injury and subsequent withdrawal from the exhibition match, which came around the time when he withdrew from the 2023 Roland Garros, was a blow to fans who had been eagerly awaiting his return.

The two have a really good relationship and in the past, Kyrgios even revealed that he would like to mentor Rune. But fans that awaited their meeting will now need to wait if they meet on the ATP Tour as the exhibition event was cancelled with the statement that reads:

"We are devastated to inform you that we have to cancel our tennis event – Energi Danmark Champions Battle 2023 between Holger Rune and Nick Kyrgios."
"During a happening in Australia Nick Kyrgios unfortunately injured his foot very badly. Nick Kyrgios, his team and f Sports Group have done everything in our power to make this sold-out event happen, but sadly the verdict from Kyrgios medical staff and physio is, that he under no circumstances will be ready to play on the 24th of May."
"Both players are equally devastated that Energi Danmark Champions Battle 2023 is cancelled. They were really looking forward to playing each other and give all the excited tennis fans and sponsors a unique tennis experience. But some things are out of our hands and especially when it comes to injuries, it’s important to listen to the experts."
