The terrible season of Denis Shapovalov is continuing as the Canadian withdrew from the Swiss Open where he was set to play.
It's not been a very good year for Denis Shapovalov who has been battling confidence issues and injuries for much of it. He finally found some solid tennis at Wimbledon but unfortunately, his run ended against Roman Safiullin who was able to overcome a slow start in that match and win it in four sets.
The match itself was a bit odd as Shapovalov won the opening set but then completely faltered as the match went on. The progression of it made much more sense when you hear what he had to say after the match and the injury he has.
The Canadian explained the odd nature of his injury. It's not an injury that really prevents him from actively playing but rather gives him a lot of soreness in his muscles which gets worse as he plays more. So Shapovalov was essentially winning until he felt fresh but then he felt more tired as the match went on and that was the problem.
He expressed hope that he gets healthy soon, especially before the ATP Tour shifts to North America in a couple of weeks. He was supposed to play at the Swiss Open in Gstaad on clay after Wimbledon but he has now withdrawn from that event which is hardly a surprise.
The Canadian is likely to return home and then rest up with the hope of healing the injury as quickly as possible so he can be ready for the Canadian Masters in Toronto next month. It's been a really poor season for him but hopefully, things will turn around after some rest.
