Felix Auger-Aliassime Withdraws From 2023 Swiss Open Gstaad

It's been a very shaky season for Felix Auger-Aliassime and we'll have to wait a bit more for the turnaround as he's out of the Swiss Open.

Auger-Aliassime last played at Wimbledon where he produced a pretty solid effort overall, at least when compared to previous weeks. The Canadian withdrew from all of his prep events leading up to Wimbledon only playing two exhibition matches before.

The effort was fine but he still lost to a lower-ranked player, one he realistically should have beaten comfortably. The problems were all too familiar, very inconsistent play from the baseline as he had 50+ unforced errors in that one.

It's been a poor year overall for him with only 14 wins in 26 matches on the ATP Tour, which is a shame as he had a really superb last year (64-28). He's fully aware of it and hopeful of a change but he'll have to wait a few more weeks for that. Auger-Aliassime was supposed to play in Gstaad at the Swiss Open but he won't as he withdrew from the event.

After crashing out of Wimbledon, Auger-Aliassime posted on social media, noting that he's going to put all of his focus towards the US Open hard court swing. His withdrawal from the Swiss Open suggests that he doesn't want to play on the clay courts anymore, focusing on the US swing.

"With Wimbledon being one of my favorite tournaments, I’m hoping to make my stay longer in the coming years. For now it’s time to put all of my energy in to the upcoming US hard court swing."

It's rather clear that the shaky few months left a mark on him with his confidence not where it needs to be for a player at his level. Going back home to North America should certainly give him the added boost as he will be able to rest up at home and focus on a very crucial part of the year.

He did really well indoors last year in Europe and getting back to winning ways in the US could set him up for a strong finish to the year. It's certainly needed so he can 'save' his season as this so far has been anything but great.
