Nick Kyrgios has declared himself the best grass-court player in the world as he prepares to challenge for the Wimbledon title in June and July.
Nick Kyrgios told the Herald he felt at the top of his game when speaking at an basketball promotional event in Sydney. When asked who he thought was the top player in the world going into Wimbledon later this year, the 2022 Australian Open doubles champion responded:
“I mean, on the grass, I’d say me.” Speaking about his 2022 season in a recent interview, he said: “Something about this year has just been different. I’ve played five or six events and I’ve gone pretty well in pretty much every one I’ve played and I’ve beaten a lot of the top players in the world this year."
“I guess it’s more of a resurgence year, just going out there and showing people that I don’t have to go out there and play all the time, [that] I can still be at the top of the game. I’m just enjoying it and doing it my way."
However, despite having a great 2022 season, Nick Kyrgios won't play the 2022 Roland Garros. The Australian doesn't like the slow pace of the courts. Fast courts suit him because they let him to keep points short and sweet, which he prefers. It also strengthens his service, which is among the greatest in the world when it comes to working. He hasn't played at Roland Garros in some years, and he isn't planning on doing so in 2022.
He formally withdrew from the event today, but he previously astonished supporters by stating that he will surely play in 2023. Many assumed Kyrgios had warmed up to clay after competing in the Houston Clay Championships earlier this year, but the explanation is love. The city of love will host Kyrgios for love because his girlfriend desperately wants to visit Paris.
