Dominic Thiem will play his first ATP event of the 2022 season at the Serbia Open as the Austrian spoke to Serbian press ahead of the event.
The 2022 Serbia Open promises to be a great spectacle with world number 1, Novak Djokovic, taking part, and also former world number 3 and 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem will play at the event in Belgrade.
In recent months, Thiem had a lot of troubles with injuries, but now it looks like he's finally back as he will face John Millman from Australia in the first round of the 2022 Serbia Open in Belgrade. Ahead of the tournament, Thiem spoke to the media.
"I am very happy to be back on court in Belgrade. I started at the Challenger in Marbella, then I tested positive for coronavirus, and stopped again, so I have only practiced for 10 days. It's not ideal preparation, but it's my first tournament. I hope to play good matches."
Despite these challenges, Thiem remains optimistic. His focus is not just on the Serbia Open but also on the larger picture – returning to his top form and preparing for Roland Garros, a tournament he values deeply.
The French Open has been a happy hunting ground for Thiem in the past, with two runner-up finishes. His clay-court prowess is well-documented, making his performance in Belgrade all the more crucial as a stepping stone.
"It's important that I fight for every point, get back my level again. Roland Garros is an especially important tournament for me."
The Serbia Open, therefore, is more than just another tournament for Thiem. It's a testing ground, a place to gauge his physical and mental state. The road to recovery in professional sports, especially in a game as physically demanding as tennis, is often a complex and challenging journey. Thiem's situation highlights the delicate balance athletes must maintain between their health and their professional commitments.
