Djokovic Admits 'Not Having Drama-Free Grand Slam Drives Him'

by Kadir Macar

Novak Djokovic is one of the most driven people on the planet yet not having a drama-free Roland Garros fuels him further.

Most of Djokovic's career was spent proving others wrong as he had to do since emerging as a tennis player. When he first did that many years ago, Djokovic found himself disrupting the 'perfect rivalry' between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, having to deal with many fans openly disliking him.

He often played against crowds even now he's not the most popular tennis player on the Tour. He learned to use that as fuel and after some more drama at this year's Roland Garros, the Serbian certainly looks motivated.

This year's drama was his doing, as it usually happens. He expressed some views publicly that many people don't like. He didn't get fined over it because it's not against the rules but it was deemed inappropriate by the French Ministers of Sport. He still stands by his words even if people don't like it.

Well, I don't mind saying that. I mean, I would say it again, but I don't need to because you have my quotes if you want to reflect on that. Of course, I'm aware that a lot of people would disagree, but it is what it is. It's something that I stand for. That's all.

Djokovic's first match since then featured a packed crowd and a very good match against Marton Fucsovics which he ended up winning. It wasn't a clean match as he once again fumbled a break lead in the first set but he held nerves to win in the end. After the match, Djokovic confirmed that having a drama-ridden grand slam kind of fuels him.

You know, drama-free Grand Slam (smiling), I don't think it can happen for me. You know, I guess that drives me, as well.
