Casper Ruud Withdraws From Doubles At Wimbledon Despite Winning Start

Casper Ruud might have done too much golfing leading up to the 2023 Wimbledon event as he's now out of the double due to an injury.

Ruud is a clay expert and he enjoys the part of the season when the tennis is played on the red dirt the most. While the Norwegian did collect a bunch of ATP 250 trophies on the surface over the years, he also played in three Grand Slam finals which doesn't happen by chance.

While he loves to play on clay, Ruud doesn't particularly enjoy the grass, at least not when it comes to playing tennis on it. He loves to play golf, that's a known fact and he joked last year that his Wimbledon preparation is mostly him playing golf.

He seemingly backed up this year by pulling out of Halle which was set to be the only grass event he would play before Wimbledon. Stories on his social media showed him playing golf among many other things and that might not have been a good idea.

Why does that matter? Well, he just pulled out of Wimbledon with shoulder pain. Pain that, to be fair, wasn't a problem while he played in the singles but still something to consider. His loss to Liam Broady in the singles did feature a medical timeout but it was for his foot, not his shoulder.

The Norwegian remained in the doubles draw together with Williams Blumberg but they're now out of the draw because of an apparent shoulder injury to Ruud, despite winning the first-round match against Roberto Carballes Baena and Daniel Elahi Galan 6-3, 6-2. It's an unfortunate end for his grass season but he won't be too sad about it.

After all, Ruud recently confirmed that he and grass will never probably work out as he prioritizes clay having grown up idolizing Rafael Nadal. For now, it's vacation time and then the North American swing. He played in the US Open final last year.
