After months of speculation, Andre Agassi has been officially named the new Team World Captain at the Laver Cup starting next year.
Roger Federer established the popular exhibition - Laver Cup, years ago. The competition was split into two teams: one team comprised players from Europe, and the other comprised players from the rest of the world.
The Captains followed that pattern, with John McEnroe named the captain of Team World and Bjorn Borg named the captain of Team Europe. In recent months, we've heard speculation of both Borg and McEnroe moving on from their positions as the team captains.
Reports suggested that Andre Agassi was a candidate to take over from John McEnroe, while Roger Federer might replace Bjorn Borg.
At least half of that is true because it was officially announced that Agassi will take over from next year, as this year's edition in Berlin will be the final one for McEnroe.
The announcement came from the Laver Cup, in a statement in which Agassi expressed delight at the chance to be part of a competition that had done a lot for tennis in just seven years.
"I am truly honored to accept the invitation to become the Laver Cup Team World Captain. In just seven short years since the Laver Cup began, it’s been so enjoyable for fans, including myself, to watch the greats of the game team up and compete against one another in this incredible team environment."
Agassi will attend this year's edition in Berlin to see the competition from the other side and to get a better idea of what is expected of him ahead of his takeover next year.
Federer will also be there, and with Agassi's confirmation as the team captain, it's expected that the news about the Swiss Maestro's appointment may follow soon.
