The prize money and points distribution for the 2023 Roland Garros was announced and it's higher than last year again.
From May 28th to June 11th, the best ATP & WTA players in the world will meet for the only clay-court Grand Slam of the season at the Roland Garros, also referred to as the French Open, in Paris, France.
Founded back in 1891, the tournament is one of the oldest and since 1928, it's held at the famous Stade Roland Garros. Without a doubt, the legend of the event is Rafael Nadal who won it record 14 times but withdrew from the tournament in 2023.
His biggest rival, Novak Djokovic, also wasn't 100% fit in the build-up to the second major of the year, and so the doors opened for the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, who won back-to-back clay-court events in Barcelona and Madrid.
On the women's side, the world no. 1 Iga Swiatek is the defending champion and the only player currently competing on the WTA Tour to win the event more than once. But there are many players that want to stop her and one of them is Aryna Sabalenka, who beat her recently in Madrid. Also, last year's finalist Coco Gauff will want to show that it wasn't a fluke and fight for the final appearance again.
This year, the overall prize money distributed at the 2023 Roland Garros was increased once again compared to the last year's edition which saw a 26% increase from the 2021 edition to 42,661,000€ in total.
In 2023, the total prize pool is 49,600,000€ and the champions in singles will each cash in 2,300,000€ alongside 2000 valuable ranking points that will certainly boost their rankings after the clay-court season.
Everyone is rewarded at the French Open as the distribution starts already in the first round with 10 points and 69,000€ for those that don't manage to win any match in the French capital.
But the increase in the rewards is really steep. Already for a second-round appearance, ATP players get 45 points, while WTA players get 70 points and both will also receive 97,000€.
For making it to the third round, players get 142,000€ with 90 ATP rankings points or 130 WTA rankings points, as the two Tours have a different distribution of ranking points even though players receive the same share of prize money.
With every round, the award increases even further. Those that make it to the fourth round get 240,000€ along with 180 points for men and 240 points for women, while all quarterfinalists will be rewarded with 400,000€ and 360 ATP ranking points or 430 WTA ranking points.
Men's semifinalists at the 2023 French Open get 720 points and 630,000€, while women get 780 points and the same reward in prize money. The prize for losing in the final is 1,150,000€ and 1200 points for men or 1300 points for women.
The prize for the champions is 2000 points and astonishing 2,300,000€. To see the full prize money and points overview for the 2023 Roland Garros French Open for both ATP & WTA Tour, be sure to check it out below.
