'We Just Got Killed': Pegula On Surprising Doubles Exit At Wimbledon

Jessica Pegula didn't have a very good last day at the 2023 Wimbledon, losing in both singles and doubles.

Pegula had high hopes for Wimbledon this year, hoping to turn around a rather lacklustre season so far. She did just that with a solid singles run, but then she completely lost control in her match against Marketa Vondrousova to crash out.

Things didn't go that much better in the doubles as she and Coco Gauff suffered a surprising loss, particularly in light of what was at stake. After Krejcikova and Siniakova withdrew from the event, Pegula and Gauff had the chance to emerge as the top doubles pair on the WTA Tour, but they needed to win the trophy to do that.

Gauff has been number one in doubles before while Pegula hasn't and it's been a motivating factor for her. Unfortunately, it didn't work out as they were beaten easily. In her post-match press conference Pegula denied that the loss in singles impacted her doubles performance explaining that their opponents simply played a lot better than they did.

Usually I'm pretty good at it. We just got killed today. That team played really well. It was a really tough match. Windy conditions. But, yeah, it's always tough mentally to get yourself up for the next match, especially when it's only a couple hours later, especially a match like that. That was very heartbreaking.

I actually still thought I played okay. We had our chances. It was just kind of a tough match. Also I think we're kind of used to it, as well.

Pegula will now have a chance to head home and rest up a bit before the North American leg commences. The American has high hopes of doing well at the US Open where has traditionally played some solid tennis over the years.
