Iga Swiatek is out of the Canadian Open in Montreal after a bad showing against Jessica Pegula, and it was actually a milestone match.
The Polish player wasn't particularly pleased with the way she was playing the match as her plan didn't really work. It never started really working, and she bowed out in the semi-final. Jessica Pegula put her under a tremendous amount of pressure by attacking every second serve which resulted in her opting to serve more aggressively.
That didn't really work that well, as it created even more chances for Pegula which she mostly used. There was a minor chance for Swiatek but ultimately she couldn't keep up the consistency as she was missing a lot from the start of the match.
The combination of her missing a lot, Pegula being very aggressive and solid from the baseline as well as her tracking down a bunch of balls was a lot of breaks. How many? Well, 11 to be precise. It is true, you're not reading it wrong.
Swiatek was broken 11 times in the match, which is the most she's ever faced. For a player as dominant as Swiatek, she did suffer quite a few breaks multiple times, however, it was only Ostapenko last year that managed to break her a bunch of times since her major breakout. It was nine times, and that was the most until today. The Pole spoke about it also after the match.
"I think we are good returners, so maybe that's why, but it's hard to say honestly. For sure we were pushing each other on our returns, so maybe that's why."
The American broke her opponent's serve four times in the first set, four times in the second set, and three times in the final set. Quite a negative milestone, but Swiatek was still competitive as she managed to break Pegula eight times as well. A total of 19 breaks of serve in the match. What a semi-final.
