It might not be 2024 yet, but the 2024 season is technically underway with the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi, which sees the best players in the world compete.

The exhibition event features a unique format where players are paired up in groups, and they play singles and doubles matches. Three matches are doubles, while two are singles, and each match doesn't really matter individually.

It only matters in so far as to how many games you win because each game won counts as one point. The winner is the one who has the highest count of points.

Now, obviously, because of how math works, the team that wins 3 out of the 5 played likely wins the tie, but a 6-0 6-0 performance could certainly swing things. Each match is only one set.

This match featured some pretty big names, such as Iga Swiatek and Caroline Garcia, who are part of the Hawks, and they played against the Falcons, who Elena Rybakina and Sorana Cirstea represented.

The match was a pretty interesting one as the teams traded early breaks, after which play stabilized a bit. Obviously, the players were quite rusty and hadn't played in a while, but it was a pretty entertaining affair, considering the unique format.

There was plenty of battling on both sides as both teams had chances to really break again and go ahead; however, neither managed to do it, so we were at 4-4 after eight games.

Rybakina and Cirstea would get another chance to break in the next game, and they got it done this time around, taking a 5-4 lead. They finished off the match 6-4, putting their team further in the lead. Right now, after a few matches, the score between the Hawks and the Falcons is 19-12 for the latter.
