From December 21st to 24th, the 2023
World Tennis League will be played in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and the teams for the event were drawn.
In recent years, off-season exhibition tournaments became popular, because of multiple reasons. One of them is the obvious, that it gives players a chance to go head-to-head before the season starts.
With these exhibitions being often held in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, which are known for paying athletes well, another reason is the fact that players can earn some extra money by participating in such exhibitions.
And another factor is fun that they have at such tournaments, and one of them is certainly the World Tennis League, which is played in a team format, and these teams, the teams were seemingly not drawn randomly.
Looking at the
draw, it's impossible to think that the draw was made randomly, as it seems that the organizers wanted to ensure that players will have fun with their teammates this year.
Therefore, The Kites will see
Stefanos Tsitsipas compete alongside his girlfriend
Paula Badosa, who will be joined also by her best friend
Aryna Sabalenka, and the trio will be joined also by
Grigor Dimitrov.
On the other hand, The Eagles will consist of almost purely Russian players, as
Daniil Medvedev,
Andrey Rublev, and
Mirra Andreeva will team up, with
Sofia Kenin, who has Russian roots, joining them.
The Falcons will see a purely North American team with
Taylor Fritz being joined by his good friend
Frances Tiafoe and Canadian
Leylah Fernandez.
Elena Rybakina completes the quartet.
The two highest-ranked Polish players will join their forces in The Hawks, as
Iga Swiatek and
Hubert Hurkacz will team up, along with
Casper Ruud and
Caroline Garcia.
