Paula Badosa ended Coco Gauff's run in San Jose and it came after the young American squandered a lead twice in the opening set.

Gauff was up a break on two different occasions in the opening set but lost in the tiebreak with two consecutive doubles faults. The wind did not help her there but it was the start of her collapse which allowed Badosa to finish off the match 6-1 in the final set.

It was a disappointing loss for Gauff as she was playing really well but Badosa has no worries about the American believing her to be on a path that will end up with many championships. She said after the match:

"I had to be quite consistent in at the baseline. She’s a great runner; she’s aggressive; she has everything to to be a great champion. But in the moment, I had to be more consistent. I’m happy about this win because it was an important one for me.”

It was a great win for Badosa who did not play too well recently but a victory like this one should give her a lot of confidence. For Gauff it was another proof that she needs to work on her mental part of the game which many consider being her biggest weakness at this time. It's not surprising considering the age because everything else is there already.
