Emma Raducanu is a polarizing name in the world of tennis, with both loud admirers and very loud detractors.
Raducanu achieved a historic feat by winning the 2021 US Open. She became the first qualifier ever to win a Grand Slam event, and she did it in style, barely facing any issues in any of the matches she played.
A star was basically born, and it happened under some of the brightest lights in the world. Since then, however, there hasn’t been an equal amount of excitement about her career.
Fans and media have followed her closely, but her results haven’t been the same. Expectations have unfairly been high, but it’s only natural after what she’s been able to achieve.
For Raducanu herself, it has been mostly about the journey that she has embraced as such, focusing less on the results but rather on the process.
She spoke about her experiences on the WTA Tour so far in a Vogue+ feature she did recently, admitting that her results generally are better when she’s enjoying her time on the court and smiling when she’s playing.
"I'd say to have fun because it just makes what you're doing so enjoyable. My best results come when I was smiling, enjoying it, and having fun. So, you get to feel really rewarded, and it doesn't feel like you're working at all because you're just doing what you love."
Another thing she said in that same feature was about advice. She was asked what kind of advice she would give herself and she said that she would tell herself to listen to her parents more, which is an interesting detail.
"If I could give myself advice, when I was younger, I would probably say, listen to your parents more because it would avoid a lot of arguments."
