Sofia Kenin found her best tennis at the 2023 World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi at a crucial time, scoring a huge win over Caroline Garcia to put her team into the lead.
This year has been quite interesting for Sofia Kenin, who rediscovered some of her best tennis. It's a good thing because she's a tremendous player who actually won a major in the past but struggled a lot with injuries in recent years.
It seems like this upcoming season could be a good one because she's been on fire today in Abu Dhabi. She first scored a big win in the doubles for her team to keep them in the running and now added another win, over Caroline Garcia, in the singles to put her team in the lead 22-21.
That means that Daniil Medvedev beating Hubert Hurkacz in the final match will secure their team the win in this tie. That's because of the format, which counts each game player as one point. So, with the lead being 22-21 for the Eagles, a win by Medvedev would secure his team the overall victory.
When it comes to this match, it was pretty close. The conclusion happened only late as Garcia ran into some predictable consistency issues. It's nothing new for her, though she did play a pretty decent match overall.
Kenin was also pretty great, especially on serve, where she didn't allow too many chances. She pushed her opponent pretty well, giving herself plenty of chances, and eventually converted the fifth break point she had.
That was enough to win the match and put her team in the lead. Now it's all about Medvedev, who can even lose to secure the triumph for the Eagles.
If he loses the set 7-6, they'll play a match tiebreak. Any sort of win ends it on the spot. Stick with us to find out.
