Dimitrov Overcomes Fritz Challenge And Wins His First Match At World Tennis League

Grigor Dimitrov recorded his first singles match at the 2023 World Tennis League, when he bested Taylor Fritz.

When the two ATP players met in the men's singles match in the tie between The Falcons and The Kites, the American stepped on the court with a minor advantage, as his team won all the previous three matches.

At the tournament, where there are five matches played in a team format, each games won counts for one point, and therefore every game played counts towards the end result.

In their first singles matches at the tournament, both lost, since Dimitrov was outplayed by Andrey Rublev, while Casper Ruud proved to be better than Fritz on Day 1 of the tournament.

That meant that one of them would win their first match, and initially they both held their service games comfortably, but Dimitrov got the first break in the fourth break to establish the lead in the match.

He kept his advantage throughout the set, while hitting five aces and not making many mistakes. On the other hand, Fritz greatly struggled when his opponent served, and he couldn't create and break point opportunities to recover the lost break.

After the previous three matches all ended with a 7-6 or 7-5 scoreline, this one featured a most-dominant scoreline, since the Bulgarian won the match 6-3, closing his team's deficit with the scoreline showing 24-23 for The Falcons ahead of the last match of the tie.

In the opening women's doubles match, Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa couldn't beat Elena Rybakina and Sorana Cirstea, but the Belarusian will get a chance for revenge in the women's singles match against the Kazakhstani player, which will also decide the tie.

Should Sabalenka win the match 7-6, the tie will be decided in a super tie-break, which Rybakina once won at this tournament already.
