Coco Gauff won her Eastbourne International opener comfortably but she still went back to the practice courts after the match.
Gauff hasn't had a really strong grass season so far going 1-1 in Berlin. She won her opening match against Siniakova but got beaten easily by Alexandrova in the second match. Unhappy with her preparation, Gauff once again travelled to Eastbourne to play a bit of tennis there and she made a good start.
Despite that, fans could see her on the practice courts immediately after her match finished, working on some things. She was asked about that in the post-match press conference and she confirmed that it was to feel the grass a bit more and to work on some specific things.
I think more time on the grass and working on stuff specific, especially like a match today was super windy and I don't think either of us got much rhythm. I had the feeling that I wanted to go hit, but my coach, he approached me first, but I was going to ask him too.
Gauff has a new coach now and it's going to be interesting what happens with the American under Pere Riba who is working with her on a trial basis. We've seen practicing right after the match a few times from players in the past. Carlos Alcaraz practiced after his match recently so it's not uncommon for players to do this.
Yeah, sometimes matches like that, even though I wouldn't say I played bad, it's just one of those matches with the conditions you're not going to feel ready. Tomorrow could be no wind at all and completely normal, and now I'm like, oh, I have no rhythm. I was just trying to build rhythm.
She faces native player Jodie Burrage in the next round and that's going to be a properly tough one for the American.
