Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff are out of the China Open in their first match after losing to Luisa Stefani and Ingrid Gamarra Martins.
It's not been a very good day for Jessica Pegula, who played earlier today in singles but was beaten comfortably by Jelena Ostapenko. It comes after a solid run in Tokyo last week, which ended with a loss in the final to Veronika Kudermetova.
Pegula took the courts again today to play doubles match with Coco Gauff, and again, she lost, though the match was far more competitive than her singles match. The Americans took a long time to break down their opponent in the opening set, even though they had a few break points early.
They allowed only one break point on their own serve but saved it comfortably. The tipping point came t 6-5 in the opening set when they finally converted a break point to win the opening set. The second wasn't very good, though.
Their Brazilian opponents played much better and found better solutions in most rallies. They jumped out to an early lead and then added another break later on to win the second set comfortably. We saw a match tiebreak after that as the Brazilians jumped out to a 4-1 lead.
Gauff and Pegula won both points on the serve of their opponents to make it 4-3 and interesting again however, the Brazilians kept their distance going up 6-3 again. They then went up 8-4, and from there it was a rather easy job to finish off things.
The final score was 5-7 6-2 10-5 for the Brazilians who earned a huge win against two very good opponents. This ends Pegula's run in China but Gauff still remains in the draw for the singles. She'll play tomorrow against Veronika Kudermetova.
