'Interested To See What The Fine Will Be': Kyrgios Reacts To Compatriot's Default

by Nurein Ahmed

Nick Kyrgios has reacted to a recent default handed to fellow Australian Marc Polmans in the 2023 Shanghai Masters qualifying and is curiously waiting to see the monetary fine that will be imposed.

Polmans made headlines in the qualifying draw of the Shanghai Masters but for negative reasons. The World No. 140 was seeking to reach his first Masters 1000 main draw and came within a point of doing so when he held a match point in the final round of qualifying in a match against Stefano Napolitano.

But after he horribly missed a stop volley at the net at 6-5 in the second-set tiebreak, he fired the ball in the umpire's face by accident. He was disqualified from the match, handing his Italian opponent straight passage into the main draw.

Polmans will now forfeit his prize money earned in the qualifying draw after winning his opening match, which is in excess of $9,440 and 8 ranking points. Kyrgios has seen the video, which has been swirling around the internet, and wants to see whether and how Polmans will be penalized.

"Interested to see what the fine will be all things considered (15 thousand pounds) for the bottle shake at queens."

A similar incident happened at a Davis Cup match six years ago in which Canada's Denis Shapovalov fractured chair umpire Arnaud Gabas' eye socket by launching the ball directly at him, costing him $7,000. Shapovalov's remorse after the incident and the accidental nature of it was taken into account, reducing the fine from $12,000.

Kyrgios made his own oblique reference to an incident at Queen's in 2018 when he made an obscene gesture with a water bottle, which was later classified as 'inappropriate behavior' by the ATP. Kyrgios was caught on camera performing an imitation of a vulgar joke and was later fined to the tune of $15000 by revealing on X. Kyrgios is interested to see whether the same standards will apply to Polmans' default.
