Coco Gauff is back to winning ways in Washington which is a good development considering how much she struggled.

Coco Gauff struggled for much of the clay and grass season unable to really find a good rhythm. She added a new coach before Wimbledon and for now, the American is content with how things are going. She started to play better overall which is a good sign.

Before this week at the Citi Open, Gauff also enlisted the help of Brad Gilbert as an advisor as the American has a lot of experience, one her current coach Pere Riba doesn't really have. It's a setup that might continue in the future, but it's not set in stone. Asked about her recent progress in Washington, Gauff said she was content.

Yeah, I definitely do feel like I'm heading in the right direction. Wasn't even in the results. I think just the way I'm playing is a lot better, and I think a lot of people can see that.

I think if anybody watched my matches between Wimbledon or even at Roland Garros, like, I was winning at Roland Garros, I made the quarters, it was great, but I don't think it was the type of tennis that could sustain me to making consistently good results.

Gauff admitted earlier that she wants to become a more attacking player in the future but to do that she'll need to develop her forehand as a major weapon, something it's not right now. She plans to work on it in the offseason as it's necessary in order to take the next step.

I'm not expecting to win everything right off the bat off of a coaching change. I think if you're a player and you're expecting to just switch the coach that that's going to change your life, I think you're wrong. A lot of it is you.

Yeah, I just needed direction, and I think that they provided me that direction, so I am happy with the way I'm playing. But even if I lost today 2 and 1 and I played the way that I played today, I would still be satisfied, because that means my opponent had to play better than A-plus tennis to beat me.
