Frenzy Surrounding 16-Year-Old Andreeva After Historic Wimbledon Triumph

by Sebastian Dahlman

Mirra Andreeva is in the second week of Wimbledon after stunning compatriot Anastasia Potapova in the 3rd round.

Andreeva has been playing lights out at this year's Wimbledon. She made it through the qualifiers without many issues making her main draw Wimbledon debut. It's been a spectacular one so far as the Russian won three matches in the main draw by now earning herself a spot in the 4th round and second week of the event.

That's a rather significant achievement for Andreeva who equalled something another player from her country did twenty years ago. Back in 2003, a teenage Maria Sharapova booked a spot in the 4th round of Wimbledon by winning the third-round match in straight sets. Since then no younger player managed to do that specifically as Andreeva became the youngest since then.

The Russian is now only the 2nd player under the age of 17 to book a 2nd-week appearance at SW19 by winning all her third-round match in straight sets. Coco Gauff is another player who did it before turning 17 but she didn't do it in straight sets.

Besides being a tennis phenom, Andreeva is also a very likeable personality who quite enjoys her time with the media. She has a very genuine approach when it comes to everything she does and it shines through in press conferences. After her win over Potapova, the 16-year-old was set to do 8 TV interviews along with a media press conference.

A true frenzy for the rising star who was pretty composed in her post-match press conference expressing a lot of satisfaction about the effort she produced on the court and the result which is the second week of Wimbledon.

Of course, I'm really happy with my win today. It was tough match, but I'm happy that I managed to win it. A lot of long rallies. So, yeah, now I'm in the round of 16.

Andreeva after the win

Wimbledon is only her second Grand Slam overall as the first one was Roland Garros not long ago. She handled that one really well but is handling this one even better; on a surface which she hasn't had as much experience on as clay mind you. She was asked whether the run in Paris helped her for Wimbledon and her response was a perfect illustration of why she's so likeable.

Honestly, after Paris I just had quite a long talk with myself, just me and myself, and that's it. I talked to myself. I just talked. I don't know, just in my head I realized some things. I took some decisions that I think are now important for me.

I think I did a good job because now everything is working so far. Yes, I just talked with myself, and I decided everything what I have to do next. So far it's working.

She's so likeable that she's already filming for Break Point which we'll see next year. She announced it herself recently after she was spotted being followed by cameras.
