Emotional Jabeur To Donate Part Of WTA Finals Prize Money To Palestine

Ons Jabeur sent a very strong message after her first round-robin win at the 2023 WTA Finals, sharing that she's planning to donate part of her prize money to Palestine.

In a time when people around the world are dealing with multiple conflicts, a message of support is very important. Most probably, every party involved hopes for peace, but it still seems that it can't be achieved every time. One of those conflicts is also the one between Israel and Palestine.

Jabeur, who is currently competing at the WTA Finals in Cancun, where she won her first match against Marketa Vondrousova, is following the conflict, and she is really sad about what's happening.

The Tunisian shared her view in an emotional on-court interview after her win in Cancun. While admitting that she was happy to win her match, Jabeur immediately started talking about the topic that is close to her heart, showing a lot of emotion.

"I am very happy with the win, but I haven't been happy lately, to be honest with you. The situation in the world doesn't make me happy. It's very tough seeing children, babies dying every day. It's heartbreaking."

During the same on-court interview, Jabeur also announced that she will be donating a part of her prize money to help Palestinians. On top of that, she added that she can't be happy about her victory at the WTA Finals, seeing what's happening in the world.

"So I've decided to donate part of my prize money to help the Palestinians. I cannot be happy with just this win, with what is happening. I'm sorry guys, [I know] it's supposed to be about tennis, but it's very frustrating looking at videos every day."

Jabeur also made sure to add that she's not trying to make a political message. The highest-ranked African wants peace, and her message was a message of humanity.

"I'm sorry, it's not a political message. It's just humanity. I want peace in this world and that's it." 

In her press conference after the match, the world no. 7 spoke about the topic more, saying that she wants freedom for everyone.

"It is frustrating, and maybe donating some money would help a little bit with what they have been going through. But I know money doesn't mean anything right now to them. So I wish freedom for everybody and really peace for everyone."
