Raducanu chooses WTA 250 event over representing GB at United Cup
Emma Raducanu opted against playing in the first edition of the newly formed United Cup with a commitment to play at the ASB Classic in Auckland instead.
Raducanu is not interested in team play to begin the following year because she wants to start her Australian summer with a strong showing in singles, at a WTA 250 tournament.
She attempted to accomplish it last year but was unsuccessful, so she will be extremely motivated this time around. She joins a field that includes Coco Gauff, Sloane Stephens, Leylah Fernandez, and others in the ASB Classic, having opted to forego the United Cup.
From January 1 through January 8, Raducanu will be battling it out in New Zealand. The announcement was accompanied by a statement from Raducanu.
"I'm really looking forward to coming to New Zealand. I've heard so many good things about the tournament. It is a great way to start off the Australian Open swing. I have heard that the tournament in New Zealand is great for players and fans."
With her breakthrough happening only in 2021, the British player didn't get a chance to compete in Auckland before, as the tournament was not held for the past two seasons because of the pandemic.
"New Zealand is known for its beautiful landscape and nature, so I hope I can get to explore some of the other beautiful parts whilst in my time there."
In 2023, Raducanu wants to gain more experience, and she hopes that the ASB Classic will be one of the tournaments that will allow her to do that.
"My goals for 2023 are to again gain more experience on the Tour. It was only my first full year in 2022 and to complete more of the year and remain injury-free as much as possible - that's my biggest goal. A really good physical foundation will hold me in good stead for the future."
