Alexander Zverev lost to Taylor Fritz for the fifth consecutive time, and he was very honest about how it felt after the Stuttgart Open final.
Zverev and Fritz have now met 13 times on the ATP Tour. The German player won five of their first eight matches, but since then, it was always Fritz who won.
The American player beat Zverev last year at Wimbledon and at the US Open. He also bested the former World No. 2 at the Laver Cup and at the ATP Finals, and now, Fritz added another win, this time in front of Zverev's home fans in Stuttgart.
It was a meeting in the final of an ATP 250 tournament on grass, and despite being impacted by rain, it was also a straightforward win for Fritz, who lifted his fourth career trophy on grass.
Fritz won the match 6-3, 7-6(0), but despite losing in front of the home crowd, Zverev seemed to be in good spirits, even though he told his opponent was he honestly thought about his recent dominance in their rivalry.
During his runner-up speech, Zverev told Fritz that he was already tired of him and didn't want to see him in the following couple of years. All was obviously said in good spirits.
"Taylor, I'm fu****g tired of you. I don't wanna see you again over the next two to three years. Please stay away from me. Don't come to Germany anymore."
Zverev then complimented his opponent, but as they say, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." The German player must be annoyed by losing his last five matches to Fritz, and he will certainly want to avoid him at the upcoming Wimbledon Championships.
Fritz, on the other hand, can be happy to win a title during his preparations for the grass-court Grand Slam. He didn't have the best clay-court part of the season, losing his first match in Rome and at Roland Garros, which he mentioned after the final.
"It was not so great a clay season, so to come here and start the grass season off perfectly, I am super happy to get the title and to do it here."
Fritz will now quickly move to London, where he's scheduled to play at the Queen's Club Championships, which is an ATP 500 tournament on grass. Although it's a quick turnaround, it's expected that the American will fly to London to compete at the event, especially because of his great form on grass.
On the other hand, the same can't be said about his participation at the Eastbourne International, which is held in the week before Wimbledon. Fritz, as one of the very few players, signed up for a grass tournament in all three weeks of the grass season, and if he fares well at the Queen's Club Championships, it's expected that he will prioritize rest before playing in Eastbourne.
