Elena Rybakina vs Jessica Pegula: 2023 WTA Finals - Preview & Prediction

by Evita Mueller

The WTA Finals are upon us, and it'll start with Elena Rybakina taking on Jessica Pegula in what should be a great match.

The WTA Finals have had a lot of controversy this year because, for much of this year, we didn't even know where they would be played. The event will be held in Cancun, and it's not a bad place to be for pleasure.

The players are here for business, though, and the tournament will begin with Elena Rybakina taking on Jessica Pegula. It's an interesting matchup between two players who play a similar style, as neither really has much variety in their game.

Both love to attack and have a heavy ball that creates a lot of problems for many players. How will the matchup go? Find out in the preview below.

This won't be the first time we see them play each other. We've seen it a couple of times already, as Pegula leads 2-1. The first one happened in Miami last year, and Pegula won in two sets. The second one happened in Guadalajara last year, and Pegula won that one as well.

It was a pretty close match where Rybakina had match points. The last one happened this year in Miami, and Rybakina finally got the win against Pegula.

The previous matchups tell an interesting story. As Rybakina improved as a player in recent times, she's had more success against Pegula. It makes sense because she is the better hitter, in my opinion, as she has more power and generally can create a lot of good angles with her court coverage.

Pegula can be amazing on her day, but she certainly can be beaten, especially if you push her around like Rybakina can do. The serve will be important for both players as both will attack any slower ball.

I don't expect the WTA Finals courts to play particularly fast, judging by how Mexican courts generally play, so expect a really close battle here. In that type of setup, I kind of favour Rybakina to come out on top.

Prediction: Elena Rybakina to win in three sets.
